In a recorded interview with MuchMusic USA, Layne Staley stated that the lyrics are about censorship in the mass media, and "I was really stoned when I wrote it." Ironically, the lyrics appear censored in the official music video and the video game Rock Band 2, where the two instances of the word "shit" are replaced by similar-sounding words ("pit" in the first verse, and "spit" in the second).
